Here are some pictures of Matt Kennedy's American Shuffleboard Table refinishing project including an American Shuffleboard Scoreboard.
Here is the table out of storage after many years, I think it is from the late 40's or 50's. I bought it on eBay for $300 from a guy in
New York State.
As you can see, it is a bumper shuffleboard table. The pins in the center were coin operated when it was used in a bar. The playing surface was very solid, but needed to be completely stripped.
Here is the original American Shuffleboard Company label.
The scoreboard glass got broken while in storage, but all the pieces were still there. This gets mounted on the center of the table and is connected to scoring buttons at each end of the table.
There were 2 solid leg units with adjustable feet for leveling.
There were also 2 original light units that mount under the edge of the table and shine down on the playing surface.
After a few months of work, here is the table in my
basement ready for play.
The scoreboard cleaned up real nice. If you look close at the lower right side, you can see the cracks in the glass. The electronics work, but I need to replace the scoring number lights.
I used a hand scrapper to remove most of the old sealer on the playing surface. The whole top was then palm sanded with several different grits of sand paper. The top was then cleaned and sealed
with a pour on lacquer.
I was careful to try to leave a trace of the original scoring numbers. After sanding, I darkened them and the lines with a carpenter's pencil.
